COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM – WRITTEN BY TALIA BASTILLE

Did your teachers ever tell you that you had to read books that did not have pictures? When it comes to comic books
some school curriculum do not think comics have the potential to be written about on an in-depth level for book reports. Instead, students are encouraged to discuss novels.

Novels can be great; there are plenty that I love. How about the students that have zero interest in chapter books? Some students are heavily discouraged by reading because they do not like the format of novels. No one should blame these students because every individual is different, especially when it comes to reading. When I was in school, the students that preferred to read a graphic novel or a comic book were not allowed to do so academically.

I’m sure teachers are glad that at least students have an interest in some type of reading, but I think regardless of the setting-academic or personal, schools should make room for comic books and graphic n

ovels in the curriculum. Comics and graphic novels have the capability to be written about on an in-depth level. There are many colleges that offer courses based around graphic novels and comic books.

Students go in depth with the story lines during discussion times, and many people go on to write dissertations about them. If colleges approve of comics and graphic novels, other schools should find a similar format to imitate in their classrooms.

I’m not the first to think that comics have deep meanings, however.

I found a Colorado-based organization called Comic Book Classroom. Their mission is to encourage teachers to fight for comic book literacy in their schools. Their website, www.comicbookclassroom.com, lists kid-friendly comics along with lesson plans to encourage discussion. Comics are not just a bunch of drawings with words-they’re filled with rich story lines.

Comic Book Classroom believes that comics can enhance the literacy rate and encourage youth who have minimal interest in reading to eventually turn to other genres.

Comic Book Classroom is not the only organization pushing for comics, however; many public libraries have a graphic novel section. While some comics and graphic novels may not be suitable for those under 18, there are plenty that are appropriate for young readers. We should encourage those who have do not like reading to pick up a comic or graphic novel.

Comic books can be a step to inspire youth to read. Maybe this can extend to fantasy books as well. When I was a kid, I could not get enough of Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events. I imagined myself fighting the dark Lord Voldemort, or escaping the devious Count Olaf. Not only did my reading skills enhance, but my imagination took flight, and I felt like nothing could stop me. As I grew older,

I began to open up to more books of different genres. Not all people have this same experience, but when we encourage reading in the first place, no matter how silly or fun the genre, we create a healthy pattern to be involved and inspired with books.

MICHELLE SHIELDS BECOMES THE FACE OF COMIC BOOK DIVAS

Comic Book Divas is very excited and proud to announce Michelle Shields will be the face of Comic Book Divas Publishing starting in June.

Michelle Shields has been part of Comic Book Divas from the inception of the company and has been part of many of the comics and projects; she has been involved in comics such as “FANGS”, “A Life Behind The Mask”, and Joe Garcia’s “Deadly Threads” and is scheduled to appear in other titles such as “Marvelous” slated to begin production in 2014. Also last year Michelle began covering some conventions and events including the Wizard World Chicago Convention.

Comic Book Divas thought that Michelle was not only a natural to be the face of the company because she has been with us from day one, but also Michelle embodies the name “Comic Book Diva”‘ Michelle is a true fan of comic books, (Michelle is a huge Batman fan) in addition she is also an avid gamer and model collector,

Oh and did we mention that Michelle has recently entered the cosplay arena?

As the “Face Of Comic Book Divas”, Michelle will be the center of Comic Book Divas, she will be on the forefront of Comic Book Divas ad campains that will include print ads, and promotional materials, she will also be attending more conventions; and overall being the main spokes person for Comic Book Divas.

Since then, she has been involved in many different kinds of projects from films to TV, to comic books to print. Because she takes her time when selecting projects to be a part of, she has a very impressive resume which includes major blockbusters like ‘The Dark Knight’ to the highly renowned ‘Frankenstein: Day of the Beast’. Along with feature films, Michelle has starred in a number of accredited short films such as ‘Slasher’, ‘Special Day’ and ‘Illusion’.

COMIC BOOK DIVAS LOOKS BACK AT DALLAS COMIC CON 2013

Comic Book Divas had a great time at this year’s Dallas Comic Con as we met a lot of new people and saw some great artists, writers and cosplayers. As always the promoters and volunteers of the Dallas Comic Con did a nice job bringing the fans great guests and put on a heck of a show.

This year at the Dallas Comic Con we featured some of our classic comics, brought along some new ones andpromoted a few new titles for fans to be on the look out later this year and next year. We also had a few special guests at the table which made our table even more lively than ever.

Comic Book Divas featured two comics this year “SQUIRREL” #1 and “Penny Dreadful’s Cauldron Of Terror”; bth of the comics had awesome variant covers; the comics made people stop and take notice f both the out standing artwork and we were complimented on the story lines.

Actress, Comic Book Diva, and one of the featured stars of “SQUIRREL“, Anjanette Clewis was a guest at the Comic Book Divas table, she spoke with fans about her role as the “TV Anchor” in the comic and also signed copies of her photo variant edition cover, her “SQUIRREL” prints and took pictures with fans. Look for Anjanette in “SQUIRREL” #2 coming this summer!

We also featured “Penny Dreadful’s Cauldron Of Terror” ; this was the first time the comic debited at a Texas

convention and fans really seemed to enjoy the “Rondo Award Nominated” comic book written by Horror Hostess Penny Dreadful herself. The comic featured a “Spell-Bound” variant cover that was drawn by artist Alfred Trujillo and colored by Jeff Balke; the had a giant blank orb so that fans could take the comic to their favorite artist and have a sketch drawn in the orb.

Comic Book Divas also featured a 8×11 print of “Harker And Helsing” ; the comic will be a steampunk and gothic vampire series that will star actress Amanda Wyss as the granddaughter of Abraham Von Helsing “Abigail Von Helsing” and Brinke Stevens as the vampiric “Mina Harker”. Both artist Alfred Trujillo and colorist Jeff Balke will be working on this project.

We were also thrilled to have two fantastic cosplayers who made their convention table debut ever at the Comic Book Divas table; Enansi Volz cosplayed as Harley Quinn and Madd Moxxi and Krystle Starr cosplayed as She-Ra and Wonder Woman. Both women rocked at the Comic Book Divas area as they talked with fans, took pictures and signed prints.

More than 25,000 fans made their way to this year’s Dallas Comic Con, which wrapped up its three-day show on Sunday, May 19, at the Irving Convention Center. By comparison, last year’s
“Adding a third day to the schedule helped spread out the people but Saturday remained the busiest,” said Ben Stevens, co-owner of C2Ventures, which produces Dallas Comic Con. “As we continue to grow, we’re constantly exploring ideas and ways to make it better.”Dallas Comic Con drew about 20,000 fans over the course of two days.

With a crowd like this Comic Book Divas looks forward to seeing our fans at the Dallas Fan Days October 4th-6th at the Irving Convention Center; but until then we thank fans for coming by and visiting with us and a special thanks to Anjanette Clewis, Enansi Volz, Krystle Starr for being at the table.

COMIC BOOK DIVAS ANNOUNCES THE FIRST OFFICIAL “NEWS DIVA” TALIA BASTILLE

Comic Book Divas is proud to announce that Talia Bastille has joined Comic Book Divas as one of the first official “News Divas”; Talia will be reporting on Chicago comic book conventions,events and much more throughout the comic book and pop culture communities.

Most know Comic Book Divas as a small press comic book publishing company that creates fun and exciting comics that feature women from the entertainment industry that includes; actresses, models, cosplayers, gamers and other areas of the pop culture genres. However over the past year Comic Book Divas has been covering comic book and other pop culture conventions from across the United States, primarily in the North Texas area.

Comic Book Divas recently made the decision that they would begin creating a small news corps that would not only cover conventions but also bring fans articles and interviews from a a wide range of women from across the country to give their insights into pop culture and everything geek-dom.

We are calling our band of roaming band of reporters “News Divas”; we are starting the ball rolling in the “Windy City” with Talia Bastille; Talia’s articles will be featured in her own page entitled “The Talia Report” on the Comic Book Divas website, on Geek Girls News and on her own Tumblr page. Talia will be reporting on conventions, events and whatever else that we can throw at her in the world of geek, .

Comic Book Divas is looking is looking for Booth Divas to attend conventions in the North Texas area; if you’re a model, cosplayer, or a fan girl who is proud to be a geek then this could be the opportunity for you and a chance to let you geekiness fly.

Comic Book Divas is hiring booth models (We are calling them “Booth Divas”) to work at conventions primarily conventions in the Dallas and surrounding areas; The “Booth Diva” would be responsible for talking to fans about Comic Book Divas and its comic book line and merchandise; as well as talk to fans about all things geeky and taking pictures with fans and kids.

We are looking for women 20-21+ in the North Texas area that are very responsible and enthusiastic about comics, conventions, and all things geek-dom, plus very outgoing.

You must be approachable to fans and be willing to take pictures with them; and of course be willing to talk geek with fans for long periods of time, “Booth Divas will also be asked to roam the convention floors to pass our freebies and promo items.

You must be reliable and on time. Plus you must be able to work on Fridays and Saturdays or Saturday’s and Sundays. We will be looking for one or two booth models for the conventions for the mentioned days; schedules will be discussed upon notification

Note: To Cosplayers: If you are interested please note that you will not be able to wear your costumes for the entire convention weekend since you will be wearing a Comic Book Divas t-shirt and representing Comic Book Divas. However we will be open to talking about scheduling a time or day when you could wear your costume.

Pay – This a paid position; this will be discussed further upon the hiring process.
Gas – You will be paid for gas used in the round trip to and from the convention.
Food – Comic Book Divas will provide lunch only during the convention times; as well as snacks and drinks.
Admittance To Event – We will take care of all arrangements for passes to the event; you will not need t pay for entry into the events.
Lodging – Comic Book Divas is unable to pay for lodging for local events at this time; so you will need to make sure that you are in driving distance of the event.

Additional Perks

Prints – Cosplayers and/or Models will be allowed to sell their photo prints (Up to three different editions). The prints may be printed by you or Comic Book Divas will have them printed for you free of charge.

The photos must be approved by the photographer for selling or be owned by the model.

Promotion – Cosplayers and/or Models will be promoted of promo items like postcards, fliers and other promotional materials; they will also receive ad space to promote themselves. Comic Book Divas will create the ad for the model free of charge,
Websites And Social Miedia – Comic Book Divas will promote through our websites Comic Book Divas and Geek Girls News as well as all our social media accounts; you will also be provided with your own website page on the sites and also on Facebook, and Twitter
Contract – A contracting will be given to sign with the details of the job, wages and incentives mentioned above.

Comic Book Divas will be heading is heading back to one of the biggest and star packed comic book conventions not only in Texas but in the country, Dallas Comic Con 2013 May 17th-19th and we will be bringing some greaat Comic Book Divas models, Cosplayers, and Variants with us.

Comic Book Divas will be heading back to one of the biggest comic book events in Texas, and rapidly becoming “Must Attend” conventions in the country; this year the Dallas Comic Con will bigger and better than ever as they are bringing some of the top artists and celebrities from around the comic book and entertainment world. “SQUIRREL” #1

This is the special “SQUIRREL” #1 Movie Poster Variant Cover edition that features the face of one of the fearful fluffy-tailed varmint coming through the darkness of the black background. At the top are the words “SQUIRREL” The New Word In Terror” below are the credits of the cast.

“SQUIRREL” is a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock classic “The Birds” where a flock of birds attack a sleepy Northern California community , creating chaos and death everywhere. The 1963 film starred Tippi Hedren , Jessica Tandy,Suzanne Pleshette, and Rod Taylor. The movie is famous for some of the inspirational camera angles and frames, and with some of the most memorable cinematic scenes from Alfred Hitchcock.

A campus security guard pepper sprays s baby squirrel in front of school children, the squirrel squeals in pain as the children watch in horror; one of the students named “Lily” grabs the baby squirrel and she and her babysitter PJ takes the squirrel to the vet.

The next day Lilly, PJ and the vet release the baby squirrel back into the field and campers back into the forest. After returning to the forest the baby squirrel tells the other squirrels and other creatures of what occurred, soon the sound of chattering fills the forest

Penny Dreadful the horror hostess of “Shilling Shockers” has brought chills and and chuckles throughout the Massachusetts and New England areas; who has also spell-bound fans in over 150 cities throughout six states and also over Internet channels, and past seasons are now available on DVD including ”The Dreadful Hallowgreen” Special” Halloween Special featuring Penny and fellow horror host Dr. Ganggreen. Now Penny Dreadful is bring her “Dreary Ones” (Fans) and comic book lovers her first comic book that is created and written by Penny Dreadful herself.

“Christina” wants to invite her friends inside the house to play after sunset but Christina’s mother will not allow her to invite them into the house.

What happens when Christina’s mother leaves her alone with her baby sister and invites her friends into the house?

Penny Dreadful’s next story comes straight from the question, “How did Penny And Garou Meet?” in a story entitled “Puppy Love” ; since Penny wants to keep this story a surprise for her fans, we at Comic Book Divas can not say to much in fear that Penny may turn Comic Book Divas owner Jeff Hughes into a Texas horn-frog!

Miss Misery first comic book is entitled “Miss Misery’s A Haunting Desire”; the comic book tells the tale of Miss Misery’s obsession with her favorite band “DAMMIT” and how she follows them everywhere they appear, she is clearly the bands biggest fan, but her heart belongs to John the band’s lead guitarist John, the only problem is he doesn’t know how she feels.

Miss Misery doesn’t do flowers, candy or jewelry to get the attention of a potential boyfriend..but KIDNAPPING will really impress them.

Joining Comic Book Divas will be some of the Comic Book Divas models including actress and Comic Book Divas model Anajnette Clewis who is featured in “SQUIRREL”; she will be on hand to sign her “SQUIRREL” variant cover edition aswell as her photo prints and DVD’s. Cosplayer and Comic Book Divas model Krystle Starr is best known for cosplaying Batgirl, Green Lantern, and Princess Leia and who will be portraying “Pamela Strong” in the upcoming suer hero mystery comic book series ”Donor”; Krystle Starr will be at the Comic Book Divas table signing her special edition print from “Donor”
with art by Eddie Medina. she will also have prints of herself decked out in some of her popular cosplay costumes;
plus she will be discussing her role in “Donor”. Also joining the Comic Book Divas table for the first time will be fan favorite cosplayer Enasni Volz who is widely known at conventions for portraying the lovable, sexy but whackily derranged Harley Wuinn; she will be at the Comic Book Divas table taking pictures and signing prints.
