We sit down with Katrina Hill about her perspective as a woman in all things geek-dom and what she thinks about women and their role in comics, movies, gaming, and what she loves about being a geek girl.
Q: For those that are not hip and cool; tell us about Katrina Hill.
KH: I am the Action Flick Chick, lover of all things action. Seriously, I’m obsessed with action films…and Sylvester Stallone! I started my own website, ActionFlickChick.com, where I review action movies, talk about all the most recent news (geeky news as well as film), cover comic conventions, and interview various celebrities and stunt men/women. I am the author of Action Movie Freak (due out November 8th, available for pre-order on Amazon now), and recently joined forces with a new website, GeekNation.com to provide the world a one stop shop for all geeky news, videos, and podcasts.
Q: When did you discover that you liked all things geeky, like action movies, comics, gaming?
KH: My love for action movies started when I was extremely young. As long as I can remember I was sneaking into the living room while my dad and brothers watched various action films. They had to run me out since technically I wasn’t old enough to watch them. After a few years of persistently invading their movie nights, they finally just let 
me stay. My love for action movies continued to grow after that.
My love for gaming and comics came later when I went to college and met a group of awesome individuals who introduced me to all sorts of geeky things.
Q: Most people when they think of a “Geek” they think of the stereotypical guy with the glasses, and the pocket protector, do you think the same stereotype is true for women that enjoy movies, comics, etc?
KH: I think there is a stereotype for geek girls, starting with girls not liking geeky things. People seem to think that girls have to prove their geek cred in one way or another. Also, a lot of people picture geek girls as nothing but baggy t-shirt wearing, no makeup, average looking girls. So when a female geek wears something nice or puts on some make up they receive criticism for pandering to men and being a fake geek.
Q: For years, comic books, gaming action movies, and pop culture as a whole has been generally a male oriented hobby, but over the years women have come to the forefront. Do you think this is something new or do you feel that women have always had an inter
est in these genres?
KH: I think the interest has always been there, but it’s only recently, thanks to the internet, that we geek girls can see there’s a lot more of us than we thought. As with many male-oriented things, it’s been tough for women to get in and be accepted, either because of male resistance or because of not wanting to feel like the only woman in a male crowd.
Q: As a action movie and comic book fan, do you think that the movie industry is over saturating the market with comic book based movies?
KH: Nope. I love it! There are endless amounts of stories that can be told, so as long as they keep coming out with new and different stories for these films, I say keep them coming.
Q: I am an old school comic book reader, and one complaint I have about comic book based movies is how they change or alter origins of characters or merge different origins into one character; do you think this is necessary since the story is pretty much already in the comic itself?
Sometimes storylines that work in a comic don’t translate well into a 90 minute movie. Some change is 
necessary, but when they go changing things just because they can, that’s when it gets annoying.
Q: With DC Comics and Marvel doing reboots and/or re-visioning so many characters do you think this is something that fans are enjoying or do you think that it is getting tougher for writers to come up with story ideas?
KH: I think that people have gotten a little too obsessed with reboots, and that there are plenty of good ideas out there but a lot of the people with the funding are afraid of doing anything new. It’s good to refresh some of the characters that have been around for decades, and I know a lot of readers are enjoying DC’s New 52. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t come up with something new as well. If a writer can’t come up with something new, then it’s time to explore someone else’s ideas.
Q: With everything that is happening with women in “Geek Culture” there still seems to be a lack of leading women character’s in comics, and gaming; what female characters would you like to see in their own comic book, movie, and game?
KH: Me. Action Chick #1, Action Chick the Movie staring me, Chris Hemsworth, Sylvester Stallone, and Jason Statham, and Call of Duty: Operation Action Chick. I also would love to see Birds of Prey, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and several others in their own films. I’d love to read a comic book and maybe even see a game about Sarah Conner, picking up where the television series left off.
Q: What comics are you reading at this time?
KH: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hack/Slash, and then I pretty much stick to DC’s New 52: Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, Cat Woman, Aquaman, Batman, Action Comics, Batgirl, Swamp Thing, Supergirl, The Flash, and Superman.
Q: With the Avengers already blazing over the movie screens and burning up the box office; what movies are you looking forward to watching and reviewing?
KH: Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Expendables 2, Total Recall, Resident Evil: Retribution,l and The Bourne Legacy.

Q: What conventions will you be attending?
KH: I will definitely be attending SDCC in July where I’ll have two panels, and will mostly likely be at New York Comic Con in October. There’s a possibility I’ll be at Wizard World Chicago and Wizard World Austin.
